IV. Calculation of toroidal rotation profiles in DIII-D using neoclassical viscosity (DoE Grant ER54538) W. M. Stacey, R. W. Johnson and J. Mandrekas (to be published in Physics of Plasmas, 2006) Abstract Momentum and particle balance and neoclassical viscosity were applied to calculate the radial profile of toroidal rotation in several DIII-D [J. Luxon, Nucl. Fusion, 42, 614 (2002)] discharges in a variety of energy confinement regimes (Low-mode, Low-mode with Internal Transport Barrier, Highmode, and High-mode with Quiescent Double Barrier). Calculated toroidal rotation velocities were found to over-predict measured values most in the center—by factors of 1.5 to 3--with the over-prediction generally decreasing with increasing radius, for the L, H and ITB mode shots, but the single impurity species approximation could not properly model the multiple Ni and Cu charge states in the QDB shots.

Observation of peak neoclassical toroidal viscous force in the DIII-D tokamak.

Observation of a theoretically predicted peak in the neoclassical toroidal viscosity (NTV) force as a function of toroidal plasma rotation rate Ω is reported. The NTV was generated by applying n=3 magnetic fields from internal coils to low Ω plasmas produced with nearly balanced neutral beam injection. Locally, the peak corresponds to a toroidal rotation rate Ω(0) where the radial electric fiel...

Calculation of impurity poloidal rotation from measured poloidal asymmetries in the toroidal rotation of a tokamak plasma.

To improve poloidal rotation measurement capabilities on the DIII-D tokamak, new chords for the charge exchange recombination spectroscopy (CER) diagnostic have been installed. CER is a common method for measuring impurity rotation in tokamak plasmas. These new chords make measurements on the high-field side of the plasma. They are designed so that they can measure toroidal rotation without the...

Physics of Penetration of Resonant Magnetic Perturbations Used for Type I Edge Localized Modes Suppression in Tokamaks

Non-linear reduced MHD modelling of the response of a toroidally rotating plasma on Resonant Magnetic Perturbations (RMPs) is presented for DIII-D and ITER typical parameter. The non-linear cylindrical reduced MHD (RMHD) code was adapted to take into account toroidal rotation and plasma braking mechanisms such as resonant braking and the Neoclassical Toroidal Viscosity (NTV). The resonant harmo...

Theory for Neoclassical Toroidal Plasma Viscosity in Tokamaks

Abstract. Error fields and resistive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) modes are ubiquitous in real tokamaks. They break the toroidal symmetry in |B| in tokamaks. Here, B is the magnetic field. The broken toroidal symmetry leads to enhanced neoclassical toroidal plasma viscosity and consequently the rate of the toroidal flow damping. The neoclassical toroidal plasma viscosity also results in a steady s...

II . Rotation velocities and radial electric field in the plasma edge

The toroidal and poloidal rotation and related radial electric field observed in the edge (and core) of tokamak plasmas are of interest for several reasons, not least of which is what they reveal about radial momentum transport, but also because of their apparent role in the L-H transition and the edge pedestal. It was recently shown that if the heat transport coefficients and rotation velociti...
